Fred Stein: From Displaced Lawyer to Photographer of Exile
From displaced lawyer to photographer of exile: Fred Stein was forced to leave Germany in 1933 as a Jew and socialist. In Paris, and later in New York, he found a new language through the camera — on the streets, within the émigré community, and in portraits of some of the major intellectual figures of the 20th century. In conversation with Thomas Berlin, his son Peter Stein reflects on how his father encountered people, why his images feel so direct and unpretentious, and why his work remains relevant today.
