Thomas Berlin (based near Frankfurt am Main, Germany) is a portrait and fine art photographer with international exhibition experience, as well as a photobook author and host of creative talks.

At the centre of his visual wor stands the human being. Moving between authentic and staged representations, he explores closeness, intensity, dignity and fragility. Freedom of expression, sensitivity and respect for the people in front of his camera are essential to his practice.

Because experiences and values are unique, viewers respond to Berlin’s work with their own emotions and stories – a diversity he deeply values. He rejects rigid genre categorisation, including the division between clothed and unclothed portraits. Such distinctions, he argues, elevate nudity to a genre of its own and foster false expectations, from sensationalism to voyeurism. For him, nudity is not a subject in itself, but one of many expressive elements within his visual language.

Berlin believes that the creative process is completed only through the interaction of subject, photographer and viewer – ideally when engaging with the printed image, either as a print or within a photobook. While digital presentations via website and social media are necessary, he reserves his finest works for books and prints, where they find the framework that best reflects his vision.

He regards the photobook as a work of art in its own right, in which rhythm, sequence and materiality allow images to unfold a narrative. With his first published and now sold-out book On Every New Day, Berlin experienced the powerful impact of this medium in making images not only visible, but truly experiential.

His approach to photography is intuitive, shaped by a free choice of subject and independence of process. Photography is his passion, but not his profession; for this reason, he does not accept commissions but devotes himself exclusively to personal projects.
